Evening School

Evening School, which catered for anyone over the aqe of thirteen years, was probably opened in 1898 and lasted until about 1905.

The Board received a grant in 1898 from Lindsey County Council for £9 8s 4d for the Evening School. In 1899 the Inspector's report stated that the average attendance was 9.7 % of the total number on the Registers. According to the school register for 1901 the average attendance was 11.6%.

“Notificationof Grant” for the year 1904 to 1905 from the Board of Education showed that the recognised number of hours was 700 at a rate of grant per 20 hours of 3/6d. giving an amount of grant of £6 2s. 6d.

In 1901 the subjects were:

Commercial Geography        Monday 7,00 to 8.00 p.m.

Commercial Arithmetic         Monday 8.00 to 9.00 p.m.

Commercial Arithmetic        Tuesday 7.00 to 8.00 p.m.

Science of Common Things  Tuesday 8.00 to 9.00 p.m.

Mensuration                         Wednesday 7.00 to 8.00 p.m.

Drawing                               Wednesday 8.00 to 9.00 p.m.

The term lasted from 1st October to 30th April, 1902. 24 enrolled and they had to take every subject.

There were:

5 between the ages of 14 and 15 years

6 between the ages of 15 and 16 years

4 between the ages of 16 and 17 years

2 between the ages of 17 and 18 years

2 between the ages of 18 and 19 years

1 between the ages of 19 and 20 years

2 between the ages of 20 and 21 years

2 between the ages of 21 and 22 years

In 1898 fourteen pupils at the Evening School were said to be Farm Servants whilst the other six were Scholars. (Register 1898)

“The school continues to be well taught. The instruction is sound and practical." (Form 567, Evening Schools Report of H.M. Inspector for the year 1904-1905).
